  • Food Standards Agency Seeks Solution to Lab Sustainability


    The Food Standards Agency are advertising a vacancy for an Official Laboratory Review Lead to develop the FSA’s approach to ensuring there is resilient and sustainable Official Laboratory system, ensuring value for money. This will include stakeholder engagement and leading on the implementation of the agreed future approach. The post holder will take responsibility for their own learning and development.

    This is a development following on from the publication of the Elliot Report in 2013 as shown in the timeline below.

    Timeline:
    2013 Elliot Final Report  Recommendation calls for Government in partnership with Public Health England and local authorities with their own laboratories to consider appropriate options for an integrated shared scientific service around food standards.

    2017 FSA Board agrees that a comprehensive review of laboratories  is an important priority.

    2018-19 Closure of three laboratories

    2019 Review considered by FSA Board . The Paper notes laboratory provision is fragmented, with complex funding structures, resulting in a lack of central accountability leading to inefficiencies and that overall there is a gap in the funding and resources required to sustain food and feed sampling and testing.
