  • Two successful prosecutions after APA laboratory detects beef in lamb curry samples

In the first case, a takeaway owner has been fined for selling a curry with the wrong meat in it.

In September 2015 Trading Standards officers ordered a lamb curry from Eastern Star, Gwaun Cae Gurwen.
It was tested by Public Analyst laboratory, Minton Treharne & Davies, and found to contain only beef, with no lamb.
A follow up sample was bought a few months later and testing by MTD once again found to be falsely described.
Mr Ahmed was taken to court for breaching the Food Safety Act.
Mr. Ahmed was fined £200.00 per offence, reduced from £300.00 due to an early guilty plea, with costs of £757.00.

In the second case, Joynal Miah of Shelina’s Indian, Taibach, has been fined for selling a curry with the wrong meat in it.
A lamb curry purchased by officers of Neath Port Talbot Trading Standards was tested by Public Analyst laboratory, MTD, and found to contain beef.
Mr Miah was taken to court for breaching the Food Safety Act.
Mr. Ahmed was fined £330.00 per offence with costs of £525.00.
